Aberystwyth University
Web Developer / Industrial Year (2002 - 2005)
Aberystwyth is not a big, faceless university. We know our students and our students know us. We are committed to providing high standards of teaching, assessment and feedback, backed up a robust personal tutor system.
After completing my A-Level studies I continued my education at Aberystwyth University (formerly The University of Wales, Aberystwyth). I initially joined the university as a Computer Science (BSc) student but after the success of my first year was asked by the department of computer science to switch to the 5 year Software Engineering (MEng) course.
Sector: Higher Education / University
Projects: Web Development / Design

The Software Engineering course is an integrated masters course which includes a year in industry as one of the 5 years of study. This course and the year in industry is what led me on the path to becoming a developer and sparked my excitement in web technologies, design and web development.
Key Roles
During my time studying at Aberystwyth University I was fortunate to work on several projects both as a Freelancer and as employee. Some of the key roles I had during my time at Aberystwyth include.
Web Developer
(July 2005 – September 2005)
After graduating from Aberystwyth University I was contracted for three months to work on updating & maintain the university’s research profiles . This was a university wide project engaging with all departments and research groups to build research portfolios and micro-sites for the university.
Freelance Web Developer - Institute of Biological Science
(July 2003 - September 2005)
During my time studying at Aberystwyth University I worked as a freelance web developer for the Institute of Biological Science (IBS) on numerous web design and implementation projects. The projects included developing websites and applications for the institute and it’s research groups.
Industrial Year Web Assistant
(July 2002 - July 2003)
As part of my MEng course I completed an industrial year. For my year in industry I was fortunate to work with the Aberystwyth University creative team. The team specialised in graphic design, web and digital for both the University and third party clients. During my year I worked on numerous web and design projects including maintaining and developing the university’s primary website.
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Aberystwyth University and met some great staff and students along the way as well as making some long-lasting friendships. Aberystwyth helped me become the person I am today and has had a major role in my career as a developer. I still try and visit as often as a can and still have a fondness for the university and the town and would recommend it to anyone looking to study computer science.
